Special Needs in the event of an emergency
Persons with special needs may need extra help in preparing for an emergency event. Special needs covers a broad spectrum. You can be considered as having special needs for any of the following reasons: are visually impaired, require aid to walk, need special medication, are on dialysis, do not speak English, etc. Persons with special needs may need help gathering needed supplies, securing property, and/or evacuating. If you are someone with a special need or you know someone who has special needs, please contact Town Hall at 843-768-9166.
If we know who you are, then we will be able to inform St. Johns Fire Department personnel about your condition. Call Town Hall at 768-9166 to be placed on the special notification sheet.
In addition, Charleston County will provide a shelter that will be set up specifically to take care of persons with special medical needs. This shelter will be a temporary emergency-type facility capable of providing "special/supervised housing" to individuals whose physical or mental condition is such that it exceeds the capabilities of the Red Cross shelters, but is not severe enough to require hospitalization. It is intended to provide a safe environment for those requiring limited special assistance or surveillance due to pre-existing health problems. Only special needs' clients and their caregiver who have no where else to go will be brought to the shelter. Staff will not be responsible for medical management; they will only provide support to the caregivers.
The special needs shelter is located at the Alice Birney Middle School, 7750 Pinehurst Street, North Charleston. Please verify this location with the local news stations or by calling Town Hall at 843-768-9166.
If you rely on medical equipment run by electricity, do not go to the shelter; evacuate away from danger or go to the hospital.
Should I go to a hospital or a special needs shelter?
For your comfort, please try to make alternate arrangements before an event occurs.
NOTE: American Red Cross manages shelters. They register shelterees and provide cots/blankets (when available) and food. Red Cross will work with agencies who are special needs care providers, but cannot be responsible for those persons with special medical, dietary or other special needs impairments.
