A Message from Mayor Weaver
The actions taken yesterday by several neighboring beach communities to place restrictions to public access to their beaches has generated questions about whether Kiawah Island might take similar action. We are effectively already imposing those restrictions because Kiawah Island is a limited-access community with entry controlled by the Community Association and restricted to members and their guests.
The actions by Folly Beach, IOP, Sullivan Island and others restrict public access during daylight hours only to authorized persons including resident and non-resident property owners, renters and hotel guests, and contractors. KICA’s existing restrictions provide the same limitations. Access to Kiawah’s beach has also been restricted by the closure of the Beachwalker County Park facility. The Town’s law enforcement deputies and staff are periodically patrolling that area to eliminate unauthorized public parking.
The Town and the Community Association confer frequently and if at any point KICA is not able to maintain their existing control over island access because of staffing or other constraints, the Town is prepared to respond and assist, as necessary.
The Town’s Beach Patrol personnel and Deputies continue to provide normal coverage of the beach. The public is reminded that under the guidelines issued by the Governor during this emergency, public congregations of people are to be limited to 10 persons or less. While public health officials have advised that normal use of the beach during this event is safe and even a preferred place for individuals to be, it is critical that everyone be cognizant of and respectful to the concerns of those around you. Do not congregate in groups, do not block or otherwise restrict passage of others on boardwalks and bike paths.
If you have family members or guests staying with you or using your Kiawah home please take a moment to inform them of the importance of moderating their behavior. I ask for your cooperation so that all of our property owners using the beach and all other open spaces on the island can feel comfortable about protecting their health.
