A Message from Mayor Weaver
As of this morning, the Town has not received any direction or advice from South Carolina medical or emergency management officials that suggest that public events or activities within the Town should be canceled or curtailed. The number of confirmed or suspected cases in South Carolina remains low, and we continue to be told by official DHEC sources that none have been identified within Kiawah Island.
Nonetheless, some event organizers have announced cancellations in the past two days, and I expect this to continue. In all instances, these decisions were made solely by the event organizer and are driven by the unique circumstances and challenges of each event. The Town is proceeding with its scheduled Arts and Cultural Events program, but we are evaluating the availability of our performers and our venues, and more importantly, the availability and preferences of our critical event volunteers and our audience participation. If there is a change affecting any event, we will communicate that promptly.
For all public events, we urge that you use good judgment about your participation, opt not to attend if you are ill, or fall into a “medically vulnerable” category and use the recommended hygiene precautions.
We continue to participate in state and local medical and emergency management discussions, we are coordinating with all other island organizations. We will promptly pass on all COVID-19 information relevant to Kiawah Island. You should also stay current with KICA, Resort and other local sources for the most up-to-date information about their operations, services and events. All Town services and hours are operating as usual.
It is evident that we are experiencing a unique event whose most critical element is the absolute lack of certainty about how this will unfold. Despite the uncertainty and heightened concern about this public health event, I expect the island to be busy during the approaching spring vacation season and every attempt is being made to provide a “business as usual” experience while ensuring the well-being of our residents, property owners, visitors and employees and workers on the island. The Town will keep you accurately informed and avoid overreaction. If you have any questions, or there is additional information you would like to see communicated, please email Stephanie Braswell at email@example.com or always feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
