Beach Renourishment Phase Two
Beach Renourishment Phase Two Underway
Phase Two of the Town’s beach renourishment project began on Monday December 11. Crews are currently working near The Sandcastle and will be slowly moving east towards Mariner’s Watch over the next two weeks. Please continue to avoid areas of the beach where construction crews are actively working.
Owners of private boardwalks along Eugenia Avenue are reminded that as the dune is rebuilt, portions of their boardwalk extending onto the active beach may be buried
The Town initiated a beach renourishment project in early October to help re-establish and preserve areas of the beach that suffered extensive erosion during Tropical Storm Irma. The project is being implemented in two phases. Phase One was completed on October 31 and included:
- Turtle Point Golf Course in front of Turtle Beach Ln. and Atlantic Beach Ct.
- Ocean Course Golf Course, Holes 15-16
- Ocean Course Clubhouse and Driving Range
Permits for Phase Two were received on December 1 and work is scheduled to begin on December 11 lasting approximately 2 weeks. Phase 2 will cover three sections of beach, in the order listed below:
- Eugenia Avenue to Mariners Watch
- The Sanctuary Hotel
- The Beach Club
Work for Phase Two will be identical to Phase One and will consist of building a new dune measuring 6 feet high and 20 feet wide through a technique called sand scraping. Sand will be scraped from the low tide beach and relocated to the current dune escarpment. Please avoid sections of the beach where crews are actively working. This will not only keep you safe, but allow the work to proceed as quickly as possible.
