Emergency Ordinance Violation Fines Donated To Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic
In April 2021, Town Council selected Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic (BIFMC) as the recipient of the $5,800 accumulated from COVID-19 Emergency Ordinance violation fines. At the inception of the ordinance, any fines collected and retained by the Town were earmarked to go towards helping the Charleston hospitality industry, which was drastically affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Since September 2019, BIFMC has provided free healthcare, specialty referrals, and low/no-cost prescription services to all uninsured adults ages 18-65 who serve (or recently served) in the hospitality industry of Charleston through their Hospitality Inclusion Project initiative.
BIFMC recently used a portion of the donated funds for a three-day drive-up Moderna vaccination clinic for hospitality workers. The remaining funds will be used for the second vaccination clinic and other needs in the Hospitality Inclusion Project initiative.
