Fall Migration Banding Begins
The 13th season of fall migration bird banding began on August 15 and will continue through November. Birds are sensitive to ecological changes and are considered indicators of environmental health. Town biologists use bird banding data to monitor and diagnose the health of our ecosystem while also tracking migration patterns and monitoring populations. To learn more, visit the banding station website at www.kiawahislandbanding.blogspot.com
The site will host daily updates from the banding team and include pictures and information on the types of birds that are banded and migrating through the island. Banding occurs every day at two locations at either end of Kiawah. Currently, the team is banding a lot of Painted Buntings, but there have been some early migrants moving through as well. The species composition will change as the fall progresses.
