Hurricane Dorian Update #9
Following a conference call with Emergency Management officials to discuss Hurricane Dorian, the most recent information is below:
Hurricane Dorian is moving slowly past our coast but is still impacting the island. Tropical-storm-force winds are expected to continue through late afternoon. There is potential for flooding at high tide which is at 2:15 p.m.
Access to the island will be closed on Friday, Sept. 6 for the roads to be cleared and the building and life safety inspections to take place. Tomorrow we anticipate being able to communicate more details on the state of the island and future reentry information.
Residents who did not evacuate should stay off the roads. Assessment and clean-up crews work most efficiently with limited traffic to work around.
Due to the power outages, Kiawah Island Utility is asking that those remained on the island minimize their wastewater flows. Power is out island-wide due to severe weather conditions. When the winds subside, Berkeley Electric will begin restoration efforts. At this time, the timeline for restoration is unknown.
You can expect the next update tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. If there is breaking news, we will release that information before our scheduled communication.
