Hurricane Irma #9
Mayor Weaver has issued an Emergency Order restricting vehicles from entering or moving around the island and will be enforced by Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. This ban will commence tonight at sunset and will lift one hour following sunrise tomorrow. The concern is nighttime visibility is greatly reduced and high flood water and debris is everywhere. In addition, we have another high tide tonight (1:04 a.m.) and are concerned that it could re-flood roads where flood waters have subsided. We cannot ensure sufficient emergency personnel in the event a vehicle is stranded.
While a number of side streets may appear clear, most of the major roads including Kiawah Island Parkway and Governors Drive are impassable. These conditions are likely to remain until the storm has passed and the levels on the Kiawah river have receded.
The Town and Community Association are making preparations to begin recovery operations as soon as possible with debris removal efforts beginning at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
You can expect the next update in the morning after we evaluate. If there is breaking news we will release that information before our scheduled communication.
