Hurricane Isaias Downgrades to Tropical Storm | Update #2
Hurricane Isaias has downgraded to a tropical storm that will likely pass the South Carolina coast on Monday evening. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Kiawah Island. Conditions are expected to deteriorate Monday afternoon with the most substantial impact occurring Monday evening and lasting through Tuesday morning.
Our community could experience sustained wind speeds of 45-55 mph with gusts up to 70 mph, excessive rainfall, isolated tornado threats, flooding, and minor erosion. As a result, power outages and trees and large debris falling are possible. Potentially dangerous surf and rip currents are expected to continue into next week.
The most significant concern for flooding will be at high tide on Monday evening (8:59 p.m.) and Tuesday morning (9:06 a.m.). The Community Association has reported that pond levels were low due to lack of rainfall, but their staff is making additional adjustments to levels in preparation for the storm.
At this time, Monday’s trash collection will be normal operations. Tuesday’s trash collection could be delayed. An update will be provided tomorrow.
Prepare
Residents should prepare their homes by ensuring that outside personal property is secured and gather supplies so they can limit travel during the storm. Property owners and managers with rental guests should forward the information above to their guests.
The Town of Kiawah Island, Kiawah Island Community Association, and Charleston County Emergency Management officials will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Isaias and prepare for potential impacts.
