Sea Turtle Research Fundraiser
The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol (KITP) has been in existence since 1973 and has full financial support from the Town of Kiawah Island. Supporters of our turtle program often ask how they can donate financially to our patrol. We are thrilled to announce a partnership with the Town of Kiawah Island, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the Kiawah Island Community Association, and the Kiawah Conservancy to support a project that is near and dear to all of us, the Northern Recovery Unit Loggerhead DNA Project. This genetic project has been in existence for over a decade and covers all of the turtle nests in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and several beaches in northern Florida. Dr. Brian Shamblin, from the University of Georgia (UGA), leads this exciting research project. UGA researchers extract maternal DNA from eggs to identify the individual female associated with each nest and develop a census of the nesting population.
This research has identified over 10,000 “unique” (individual) females by egg samples taken from every single nest-laid during a nesting season. Since this is a multi-state approach, we are learning invaluable information about loggerhead nesting patterns along over 1,000 miles of the southeast coastline.
In the past, this project has been fully funded by a federal grant; however, that is no longer the situation. Due to a decrease in federal funding, the project will likely shut down if necessary, funds are not raised. We need your help by October 1, 2019, to raise $38,000 to help ensure the continuation of this important research project.
Please consider donating to this incredible research project today! A tax-deductible donation to the Kiawah Conservancy for “Sea Turtle Research” is the best way to support our Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol. As a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, the Kiawah Conservancy is capable of receiving, restricting, and distributing funds for this project. 100% of donations received will be distributed directly to SCDNR to support this research project.
