The Bach Society of Charleston (BSC) will close their 2018 Festival with the Bach Festival on the Islands performance in Holy Spirit’s beautiful and acoustically rich sanctuary on Sunday, March 4th at 4pm.  The concert begins with the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and will be followed by the program’s centerpiece for the Lenten season:  major selections from the Bach St. John Passion.

BSC Artistic Director & Conductor, Ricard Bordas, has assembled outstanding baroque musicians from Charleston and around the country to comprise the Charleston Baroque Orchestra & Voices.  Leaders of the orchestra and Julliard colleagues, Cynthia Roberts, baroque violin and Phoebe Carrai, baroque cello are two of the best-known baroque instrumentalists in the country, and we’ll be fortunate enough to hear outstanding tenor Rufus Müller as the Evangelist in the Passion.  Please see the links below to become better acquainted with these world class artists.

Charleston area audiences are well acquainted with soprano Margaret Kelly Cook and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Luiken who’ve performed often with the Charleston Symphony, and will be among the eight soloists featured in the St. John Passion.  We are fortunate to have artists of this caliber to present the Passion in much the same fashion as its debut performance on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers in St. Nicholas Church, Leipzig Germany.  Yes, you’re correct, that’s the St. Nicholas Church you see in the background art on this page.

As Murray Somerville, BSC Board member and positive organist likes to say, “18th – century music, on 18th – century instruments, in an 18th – century city – a unique combination in the United States!”  Join us on March 4th for the opportunity to hear Bach’s music performed the way it was intended to be performed.
