Town Seeks New Municipal Judge
Judge John Strauch has announced his plans to retire from his position as the Town’s Municipal Judge at the end of his term on March 1, 2021.
With Judge Strauch’s upcoming retirement, the Town is seeking a new municipal judge to train under Judge Strauch’s direction until his term expires in March. The Town is seeking a candidate that Town Council will appoint as Municipal Judge to serve for no less than two years, but no more than four years. The selected candidate must attend seven days of training in Columbia, five days of which are devoted to criminal law issues and two days dedicated to problems common to criminal and civil law matters. After completion, the judge must pass an examination based on what has been covered in the training sessions, consisting of 100 questions of which you must answer at least 70 correctly. If the judge is a member of the SC Bar, they are not required to take the examination but must attend the training sessions.
The judge must also annually fulfill a continuing legal education requirement (minimum of 14 hours). Candidates with prior legal experience involving litigation and trial of cases are preferred but not required. Interested persons should contact Town Administrator Stephanie Tillerson at stillerson@kiawahisland.org by October 30.
