I was raised in the Chicago suburbs and attended Western Illinois University. I worked in the steel industry for more than thirty years. Most of my career was spent at an employee-owned company, Mapes & Sprowl Steel, with facilities in Illinois and Tennessee. I served as president and CEO from 2003 until 2015, when the firm was sold as the culmination of the ESOP strategy to benefit the employee-owners.
My wife Theresa and I first visited Kiawah in the spring of 2005. After a weekend trip to the island we returned the following month and purchased a home nestled along the first fairway of Turtle Point. We used the house as a vacation getaway until 2009, when we sold our home in Illinois and moved to Kiawah.
I was elected to Town Council in 2016. I was appointed as Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, Liaison to the Municipal Center Committee and Liaison to the Communications Workgroup. I was re-elected in 2018 and was appointed as Mayor Pro Tempore and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.
I look forward to serving the Town for the next two years and pledge to work to ensure Kiawah remains a special place for those of us here today as well as the future residents.
Theresa and I have two grown sons; Matthew lives in Orlando and Brian lives in Washington, DC. I enjoy the frustrations of golf, have written two novels, and spend my free time walking two large dogs, playing piano, and reading non-fiction books.
