Traffic Study to be Conducted Regarding Beachwalker East Proposal
On December 5, the Town of Kiawah Island Planning Commission reviewed a preliminary subdivision plat application submitted by Kiawah Partners altering the current approved plat for Parcel 13. The newly created road Southern Pines Lane as part of Parcel 13 is proposed to connect to the existing Duneside Road. The terminus of Southern Pines Lane proposes a cul-de-sac. The submitted preliminary plat and application support documents can be viewed here
The Planning Commission did not take any formal action on the submitted application at the meeting. In response to numerous requests for an independent traffic and safety study to be conducted and subsequent to Town Council approval, the Town has since contracted with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. to complete a traffic and safety study for the area. This study is to include the collection of traffic volumes and speed background data, trip generation analysis with traffic volume projections and proposed development impact, a corridor assessment, and a data analysis report developing recommendations regarding the impact of connecting Duneside Road to portions of Parcel 13 which are to include considerations for improvements to pedestrian and bicycle safety, roadway modifications and/or sidewalk modifications in the area.
No timeline has been finalized for the traffic and safety study. On a date that is yet to be determined, the Planning Commission shall reconvene to discuss the submitted preliminary subdivision plat application and the findings of the contracted independent study on or prior to January 24, 2019.
