Updates from Town Council
The following is a summary of announcements from the July 6, 2021, Town Council meeting. Watch the meeting here.
Town Council approved the first reading of Ordinance 2021-09 to rescind the previous ordinance 2020-13, which provided a salary to the Mayor and Council Members, but also declared that such payments did not create an employment relationship or entitle them to employee benefits.
The Town has since discovered that the Internal Revenue Service considers paid elected municipal officials to be “employees,” and the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority requires that all employees be offered benefits, which contradicts the intent and terms of Ordinance 2020-13. Upon the second reading, Ordinance 2020-13 will be rescinded. The Mayor and Council Members of the Town of Kiawah Island will receive no salary or benefits other than reimbursement for expenses.
Town Council approved the following contracts:
- A contract amendment with All South Consulting Engineers to enter into a second one-year extension for post-disaster debris monitoring services.
- A contract amendment with Jan-Pro Cleaning Systems to enter into a one-year extension to perform cleaning services at the Municipal Center.
Town Council appointed Lin O’Leary to the Board of Zoning Appeals. She will serve a three-year term.
