Welcoming Your Guests to the Island

Encourage your guests to visit the Kiawah Visitors Center at Town Hall (4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Kiawah Island) for local events and places to visit while they are in town. The center is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wildlife Safety
Many out-of-town guests are unfamiliar with the unique wildlife in Kiawah and may be unaware of safety precautions around these animals. Remind them to respect and be cautious of wildlife while they enjoy their stay.

Alligator Safety Reminders:

  • Maintain space from pond edges, especially with children and pets.
  • Never approach an alligator.
  • It is illegal to feed or harass alligators. If you see anyone feeding and harassing alligators, please contact the county’s non-emergency number at 843-308-7333.

Protecting Turtles and Shorebirds:

  • No lights on the beach at night.
  • No metal shovels. Also, no plastic shovels larger than 14″ and make sure you fill your holes before leaving the beach.
  • Keep off the dunes.
  • No glass, drones, balloons, plastic shopping/carryout bags, plastic straws, or styrofoam. Also, be sure to gather all of your belongings before leaving the beach.
  • No feeding or harassing of wildlife of any kind. Give all wildlife space to feed, rest, and nest.
  • Remember to consider the seasonal leash regulations. All dogs/pets must be leashed from March 16 until October 31. More details here. Access Printable Leash map here. Anyone experiencing problems regarding noncompliance should notify the Town immediately. Beach incidents should be reported to Beach Patrol at 843-518-2880.

Beach and Other Island Regulations
A great guideline for your visitors is the Good Neighbor Brochure. This lists many of the common rules and regulations that guests should keep in mind during their stay.

Remember that those who are traveling from other areas may not be aware that glass, metal shovels, plastic carryout bags and straws, Styrofoam, drones (without a Town permit), and balloons are not allowed on our beaches. They may also not be aware of the seasonal leash regulations, the importance of staying off the dunes, or to leave space for shorebirds to thrive.
